Picpoul de Pinet goes Bag-in-Box
The 'Syndicat Coteaux du Languedoc/Picpoul de Pinet' has come up
with the idea of creating a generic 3 litre bag-in-box design, which
can be used by all AOC Picpoul de Pinet producers. This crisp floral
and sometimes complex dry white wine is made around the Bassin de
Thau between Agde, Pézenas and Sète (on the Languedoc coast),
entirely from the interesting Picpoul variety. Bag-in-box wines are
selling very well in France, as they are in the UK and other
countries. Les Costières de Pomerols is the first cellar to launch
one. Future plans include BIB for Côtes de la Malepère wines and
Languedoc rosés.

German growers wait for big freeze
Growers in all of Germany's main wine regions are hoping and gearing
up for their Eiswein (ice wine) harvest, as soon as the temperature
drops to -7 degrees C or below. Weather reports look favourable for
the right conditions to freeze the remaining grapes and produce
naturally very sweet (but balanced) wines by frost concentration!
It's a gamble many growers take each year to see if they can produce
a few precious bottles of Eiswein nectare. If it doesn't get cold
and dry enough, these last selected bunches deliberately left on the
vines will be lost.
Keen producers waiting and ready with their woolly gloves and hats
include Weingut Clauer in Baden, Christian Reiss in Franken, Ernst
Loosen in the Mosel, Monika Schneider in the Nahe, Ralf Anselmann in
Pfalz, Balthasar Ress in the Rheingau and Louis Guntrum in
Rheinhessen. More info on the German Wine Institute website.

Fête du Millésime, Bandol 5 December 2004
If you're in the Bandol area (on the Var coast between Toulon and
Marseille) on Sunday 5th Dec., then come on down to the port to
taste the just-born 2004 vintage. The majority of the 50-odd Bandol
producers will be offering tastings of their whites, rosés and reds,
the latter made mostly from still youthful Mourvèdre, from this
year's promising vintage. Judging by last year's event, this should
be a fun day out and open to all for a mere 4€ for your Bandol 2004
tasting glass. My advice - stay the night and don't try to taste all
the wines!

"Near record" 2004 English harvest predicted
The 2004 vintage in the UK got under way in September with the bulk
picked early to mid October, and predictions are positive. Reports
from vineyards around the country claim this year is "an excellent
harvest for both quality, and, crucially, quantity."
A warm dry spring preceded an unremarkable summer, which still saw
bursts of sunshine and dry weather among the wet spells. Many
vineyards green harvested during the summer, as the vines were
cropping heavily. These damp conditions unfortunately meant spray
programmes had to be applied to combat potential rot and mildew
problems. But dry weather, particularly at the beginning of
September, ensured proper ripening.
Numerous vineyards report record, or near record yields, whilst
maintaining good sugar levels. As one vineyard commented: "with
sales burgeoning, this is a much needed result as stocks were
getting low." Potential alcohol figures were surprising, in many
cases the musts requiring "minimal or no chaptalisation" (addition
of sugar to enrich the must before fermentation, also common in
parts of France).
2003 has been declared an exceptional year attracting wide public
interest. 2004’s more ordinary weather has "nevertheless produced
good quality and quantity" and winemakers are predicting this year’s
wines will have "excellent structure, balance and longevity." The
anticipated yield could excede 25,000 hectolitres (for comparison,
Germany produced about 10 million hl and France over 50 m hl), a
significant increase on the average 2003 of 14,500hl or 1.93 million
bottles (new plantings are also coming on stream).

New Zealand takes lead in screwcaps as wine closures
By Terry Dunleavy MBE
Leadership of the worldwide move to screwcaps as wine closures has
passed to New Zealand following the 1st International Screwcap
Symposium just completed in Marlborough's main town, Blenheim. Over
260 delegates from countries such as Australia, New Zealand, UK,
France, Italy, USA, Chile, and India, agreed to a committee to
establish an international organization dedicated to promoting and
improving screwcap wine closures.
The symposium was conceived and organized by the New Zealand
Screwcap Initiative, started in 2001 by a group of Marlborough
wineries frustrated by rising levels of contamination of their wines
from TCA in natural corks. Since then, screwcap use in New Zealand
has spread rapidly and it is estimated that over 70 per cent of the
country's 2004 vintage wines will be sealed by screwcap...
Editorial comment - interesting stuff even if rather one-sided.
There are dissenters who aren't yet so convinced about screwcaps due
to the relative lack of long term research data for all types of
wine; in particular concerning ageing effects for fine reds ("redox
potential") and reductive flavour taint (click on Laroche Chablis
below for more on this).

AguaTierra launches "first organic Chilean rosé"

Wines and Travels of Thomas Jefferson
Passions: The Wines and Travels of Thomas Jefferson, by Jim Gabler,

Sounds like a rollercoaster wine ride through history, accompanying
Jefferson to the vineyards of Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne,
Hermitage, through Provence, along the French and Italian Rivieras,
through Languedoc and also down the Rhine. "You'll eavesdrop on
dinner conversations at Jefferson's Paris mansion on the
Champs-Elysées, the White House and Monticello," so says the blurb,
"where the finest wine was served. You'll bear witness through
Jefferson's eyes to the emerging signs and the beginning of the
French Revolution..."
Wine critic Robert Parker said: "Jim Gabler has not only authored a
brilliant book about one of America's most fascinating and gifted
Presidents, but he has also constructed a compelling historical
account of the nation's first wine enthusiast and connoisseur."

- Wine writers are overwhelmingly men (similar to France, for

- The internet is a surging medium for quality wine prose (hoorah).
- Press releases are rarely useful (quelle surprise).

- Wine writers are bullish about wine sales.

Australia renews focus on Germany
Australia will be investing additional resources and funding into
the German market following a strategic review by the wine industry.
It recommends a shift of focus for the Australian Wine Export
Council (AWEC) from "promotions support agency" to "Strategic
Marketing Organisation". Sounds like marketing babble, but the AWEC
has also announced the appointment of Tim Lockwood as Marketing
Executive. Tim, an Australian living in Germany, has worked in the
wine industry for 20 years.
AWEC Chairman David Brownhill commented: "The German market
continues to show a growing interest in Australian wine as evidenced
by a 39.1% volume increase of exports in the year ended 31 May 2004.
Germany has now grown to become Australia’s 4th largest export
market by volume.” Mind you, the low value figures show they've work
to do convincing people there to spend more on Oz wine...

Burgundy targets reduction in fungicides
A press conference held recently by the Bureau Interprofessionnel
des Vins de Bourgogne (BIVB) centred on the theme "alternatives for
environmentally responsible viticulture." Researchers,
agriculturalists and biochemists presented plans targeting a 50%
reduction in the use of fungicides over the next three years.
Chemical sprays are regularly applied in damp Burgundy to combat
vineyard diseases such as mildew and botrytis rot. The aim is to
replace these by improved viticultural practices and developing
natural alternatives. An experimental plot is being studied in
Aloxe-Corton. More info at www.vins-bourgogne.fr

Champagne Jacquart Vintage Rosé
The recently released 1998 Brut Mosaïque rosé is Jacquart's first
vintage pink outing. It's made from 36% Pinot Noir (vinified as
white wine with no extraction of colour), 17% Pinot Meunier (ditto)
and 35.5% Chardonnay (obviously that 0.5 makes a subtle difference),
blended with 11.5% Pinot Noir vinified as red wine. All the grapes
are sourced from Jacquart's 850 hectares of vineyards and 650
contracted growers; the 1998 vintage provided very good balance of
ripeness and acidity.
Available in the UK from Oddbins for a rather steep £29.99; however,
they'll be offering a difficult-to-believe 'buy 12, get 6 free'
(meaning you get 18 bottles for the price of 12) promotion from
July-Sept and Nov-Dec 2004. More info on worldwide distribution etc.

exactly balanced with 25 samples from Austria against only 14 from

Cru Bourgeois update
Click here for original story. In the aftermath of a "non" vote by
the majority of the Médoc Syndicat against the new classification of
Crus Bourgeois estates, pace-setting magazine La Revue du Vin de
France held a tasting to determine its own rating. Out of 500 wines
from the 2000 and 2001 vintages tasted blind, they selected only 100
that they believed merited Cru Bourgeois status, as opposed to 247
in the official 2003 reclassification. This included Château
Preuillac and Château Bellegrave, both denied their rank first time
around. And there's more: at a meeting of the Syndicat on February
12th 2004, 71% of members voted in favour of a modification to adopt
the new RVF classification! Cue legal proceedings and pistol duels

Look before your Leopards Leap
South African brand Leopard’s Leap, launched in 2002 by wine giant
Raisin Social, has changed its spots slightly adding a few new lines

SPC) and a Viognier blend. Apparently the wines are sourced from
specific growing regions of South Africa using a global information
system to identify soil types, topography and weather patterns to
pinpoint the best sites for each grape variety. So they aren't
leaping in the dark then (apologies for yet another bad pun)!

"Unity in Diversity"
This catchphrase has been coined by Vines & Wines, a group of nine
Italian export-orientated producers, who recently teamed up to pool
their marketing resources. They represent a wide range of styles
from across Italy, cemented together by "high quality products...
proactive distributors and strong enthusiasm" says president Dr
Alessandro Laurenzi. They are: Mazziotti (Lazio), Carpenè Malvolti
(Veneto), Tre Monti (Emilia Romagna), Dezzani (Piedmont), Di Majo
Norante (Molise), Cusumano (Sicily), La Vis (Trentino), Fratelli
Muratori (Lombardia, Toscana, Campania) and Cantina di Custoza
(Veneto). Finally European wine producers are taking note of how the
New World has succeeded by working together rather than treating
their neighbours as the competition.

Shaw & Smith launch Adelaide Hills Shiraz
Winemaker Martin Shaw and partner Michael Hill Smith became
convinced about the potential for Shiraz in the Adelaide Hills,
after making some there for another producer in 2000. The fruit came
from Macclesfield (no, not the town in Cheshire England with the
posh furniture shop), one of the warmest and driest parts of the
Adelaide Hills. They'd believed it was too cool for Shiraz but, as
Hill Smith said: “We've since learnt the dangers of generalisation!”
A contract is now in place with a vineyard here to ensure long term
supply. “Despite being warm by Adelaide Hills standards,
Macclesfield is cool enough to produce a Shiraz with the classic
pepper and spice characters,” explained Hill Smith.

winery in Malras (Limoux), source of the new upmarket varietals. The
brothers had already been working closely with Jacques Astruc, owner
of the estate...

'New Rioja' single estates
A seminar and tasting in London last month focusing on 'super
premium' Riojas served as a platform to communicate the concept of
single estate wines. Although not really a new idea - think Viña
Tondonia, Contino's Viña Real and Viña Pomal - there's a
longstanding tradition of purchasing grapes from growers in the
region...

Charles Heidsieck NV Brut Réserve 'Mis en Cave 1998'
The latest release of this consistently sublime Champagne is made
from 37% each of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier with 26% Chardonnay,
and benefits from over three years maturation in Charles Heidsieck's
cellars. The 'mis en cave' date on the front and the disgorgement
date on the back hold the secret to how long it's been aged for on
the yeast-lees, to the nearest six months. This concept gives you a
better idea of the style and how the champagne develops, e.g.
fresher with more youthful fruit or older, toastier and richer.

'Text book year' for Port
A vintage report written by David Guimaraens, head winemaker at the
Fladgate Partnership, matches the very positive statements from
other Port producers about the potential of this year's wines. "From
the start of harvest, the colour and fruit released from the skins
during fermentation were evident, and the tannins were present in
large quantities, making the young Ports stand out for their
quality. 2003 could well be considered a text book year for good
Port production." We'll have to wait until spring 2005 to see
whether this translates into a Vintage declaration.

'Grand Cru' Pastis & Absente 55
Henri Bardouin traditional pastis (named after the founder), made by
Distilleries et Domaines de Provence, was a Gold Medal winner in
this year's International Spirits Challenge.
An independent company founded in 1898, it's the only remaining
pastis distillery in Forcalquier, Provence. The tradition of slowly
infusing 50 natural herbs and spices individually with alcohol (45%)
before blending is still practised here, producing a very aromatic
and complex mix of flavours. Henri Bardouin sells for £14.95 in
Waitrose stores.

Trockenbeerenauslese treacle
Ecstatic reports are coming in from the DWI in Germany about the
2003 "vintage of the century." Markus Molitor, a grower in the
Mosel, has harvested a Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese (made from
individually selected, super-concentrated botrytis-affected grapes)
with an extraordinary must weight of 331° Oechsle, thus setting a
new record for natural sugar levels. These precious shrivelled
berries were picked in Graacher Domprobst and Zeltinger Sonnenuhr
with several passes through his vineyards there.
